Linux on a Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop

Linux on Asus S101

openSUSE 11.1

Installation

Installation was done using an external USB disk drive and the openSUSE 11.1 DVD. The installation uneventful (once an issue with bad RAM connection was resolved).

The openSUSE installer resized the 16GB SSD in half without issue. The remaining half was set for /, /home was created on the supplied 16GB SDHC card.

Status of components / operations

Virtually all of the S101 hardware appears to have been correctly detected and setup "out of the box". The only things that I have noted so far that aren't completely setup are some of the function soft-keys, such as WIFI on/off, volume controls. Other soft-keys do work, such as, screen brightness, sleep

Function

Status

Notes

Wireless

Works perfectly

Worked OoTB. Appears to use ath9 module. Connects to my WPA2 network. Seems to get good signal and throughput (better than some of my other machines)

Screen resolution

Works perfectly

The non-standard 1024x600 display was correctly detected setup

Sleep

Works perfectly

Worked OoTB.

Can be activated by:

  • Sleep soft key (Fn F1)
  • Closing the lid
  • Selecting 'sleep' from power monitor applet

Trackpad

Works

Scrolling, 1,2, and 3 finger tapping all work. My only issue is that the trackpad is reasonably large and I touch it quite a bit when typing and the cursor then jumps to another location

CPU throttling

Works well

The CPU automatically throttles between 800 MHz and 1600 MHz (via a couple of steps) as required. The machine appears quite responseive.

Volume control softkeys

Do not work out of the box, but there is a simple workaround

Have remaped <META> and the appropriate Fx key to the desired action using:
Personal Settings -> Keyboard & Mouse -> Keyboard Shortcuts -> KMix
